Smartphone apps to make ESTA travel easier

Thanks to new technologies, your trip to the USA has never been so pleasant. In order to go to the USA, all the red tape has been simplified with the ESTA. These days, thanks to the Visa Waiver Programme, you can skip the visa and simply make an ESTA authorisation request online, without having to leave the house!

Now isn’t that just proof that technology can make our lives easier? But it doesn’t stop there: when in the USA, there are many smartphone applications and online services that can simplify your searches, purchases and, of course, your accommodation.

Let’s take a look at some of the most appealing applications for travellers:

SHOPPING

Google Wallet is a payment system using your phone, available in the USA. It is secured, and allows you to save all of your debit or credit card details within the app, as well as loyalty cards and gift cards. This means that you can shop easily and safely. Note: Google Wallet only works with certain devices purchased in the USA. Find out more from the manufacturer.

 CURRENCY

XE Currency App converts over 180 different currencies.

BOOK A ROOM

Hotel Tonight and Laterooms allow you to find last minute hotel rooms at affordable prices.

COMMUNICATION

WhatsApp is the most universally known application for sending messages, images and videos for free from your mobile phone.

NAVIGATION

Google Maps really needs no introduction…

City Maps 2Go has maps available for thousands of cities, with no need for an Internet connection.

Moovit gives you access to timetable and network information for public transport in approximately 50 US cities.

LOST IN TRANSLATION

Word Lens instantly translates words captured on your phone’s camera in real time. It’s very useful for menus! This app doesn’t recognise handwritten words, and of course can only provide approximate translations like all automatic translators.

TOURISM

Last but definitely not least, as this is probably your primary reason for travelling!

Museums presents you with all of the museums closest to where you are: https://museu.ms.

UNESCO World Heritage features information about all of the UNESCO World Heritage sites: whc.unesco.org.

The majority of applications are available for all operating systems in multiple languages. Check the basic system requirements on the developers’ websites. According to your destination in the USA and what you like to do, you can find plenty more applications fine-tuned to your needs!
